2018 Spelling Bee Competition in Nigeria, Rules, Word List & Registration



The National Spelling Bee Competition was established years back to promote leadership and communication abilities in the children from a very tender age. The competition is designed for students between the ages of 8 and 13, to inculcate the basic imperatives of effective communication ultimately affecting improved spelling skills, development of poise, increase students’ vocabulary, pronunciation and accurate word usage.


Nigerian Spelling Bee 2018

The goal of the Nigeria Spelling Bee Competition is to bring out the best in every Nigerian student by rewarding the winners with amazing prizes and scholarships while also making the runners-up study harder.

Nigeria Spelling Bee Competition is all about bringing the best out of Nigeria and showing the world our Nigerian spelling prowess.

Participants will be asked to spell words from the English, and selected words from Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo languages.




  • Must attend a Primary or Secondary School in Nigeria.
  • Spellers may register under their schools or privately but must supply their school details.
  • Must be younger than 17 years old on 30th September, 2018. (Must have been born AFTER 30th September, 2001)
  • The advised minimum age for spellers is 9years. (This is not a restriction. It is put in place because 9year old students can compete at teenage levels).
  • Spellers who will be in Final Senior Secondary School (SS3) as at 2017/2018 academic session are advised to reconsider as the Regional Qualifier MAY be during their final examinations (Optional).
  • Note: The most outstanding young speller (Below 11years old and in Primary Class) automatically qualifies to the next level.
  • The organizers of the Nigeria Spelling Bee may disqualify, prior to, during, or after the competition, any Learner who is not in compliance with any of the Eligibility Requirements.


Registration is online on our e-portal( http://www.nigeriaspellingbee.com/portal ) upon the payment of N2,000 (Two Thousand Naira) only per speller.



  • Spellers shall start competing from the State Qualifier in their respective states. (Note that two or more states may be merged due to low registrations –below 50per state)
  • Top Spellers at the State Qualifiers will participate in the Regional Qualifier in their respective regions.
  • Top Spellers at the State Qualifier will be informed of the state of the Regional Qualifier.
  • Top Spellers at the Regional Qualifier will participate at the National Finals (Grand Finale)
  • Top Spellers at the Regional Qualifiers will be informed of the State where the National Finals (Grand Finale) will hold.


Indomie Spelling Bee Nigeria 2018

This year’s Indomie Spelling Bee Grand Finale would hold on Wednesday, May 2 at NECA Hall, Central Business District, Alausa area of Ikeja, Lagos.

The Indomie Spelling Bee Nigeria 2018 would have representation from 13 states in Nigeria at the national finals viz Plateau, Ekiti, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Kaduna, Benue, Delta, Bayelsa, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Lagos, including FCT, Abuja.

All states qualifiers/representatives would be arriving for a four-day national camp in Lagos from April 29 to May 03, 2018, while the grand finale would hold on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at NECA Hall, Central Business District, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

The winner would enjoy an all-expense paid trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC, USA as a guest, plus a scholarship fund, whilst the 2nd and 3rd place runners-up get scholarship funds and sponsors products.
