The Nigerian educational sector isn’t as good as before and this has therefore left many undergraduates frustrated and seeking for alternatives. Many are now pursuing education in neighbouring countries like Republic of Benin and Ghana.

The Republic of Benin is now described by Nigerian undergraduates as an alternative for quality education. There are a lots of universities in the country; some popular universities are Houdegbe North American University Benin, Les Cour Sonou, Eps La Cite. Others include; St. Louis African University (SLAUB), Hill City University, Richmond International University BeninIRGIB-Africa, ISAO-Benin, Esperanza University Benin and so on. Even though the tuition and accommodation fee of these foreign private institutions are quite expensive, many still register.

Houdegbe North American University has about 65% of the total population of Nigerian students studying in Benin republic. The university is bilingual and was established by DR. Octave Houdegbe who is the president of the varsity, and also a former government minister of the Central African Republic.
The criteria for gaining admission into these universities are quite simple compared to that of Nigerian varsities. Some requirements include; a minimum of 5 credits required for the course of study.  For instance, a student who wants to study Computer Science in HNAUB must have at least credits passes in Mathematics, English Language and any other 3 compulsory science subjects.
Most of the students schooling in Benin republic have sad tales of how they struggled with admission back home while others said they had to leave as a result of continuous strike by ASUU. A frustrated student know as Seun said “ Why wouldn’t I leave, I have spent over 5 years studying a course of 4years, all my mates who went to private universities because their parents could afford it are now going for service and me I’m still here. Is it right?”,

Another student Tope narrated how she fell victim to fraudsters that promised to help her secure admission into a reputable higher institution in Nigerian but ended up duping her of a large sum of money.
The last strike which kept our higher institutions closed for over 4 months made a large number of students transfer to these universities. One can only wonder if Nigerian’s educational system would one day return to its glorious days. But for now, all we can do is to hope and pray for good leadership.
