African Countries with US Travel Warning and Alerts - 2016

The US Department of States has issued travel warning and Travel Alert to its citizens who intend visiting states in some African countries. This list was compiled to help travelers stay alert and be cautious, due to the fact that these countries are known to have various security risks like violent crimes and terror attacks.

List of African Cities US Warns Citizens Not to Visit – 2016
Cameroun  (Travel Warning) - The US Department of States warn all US citizen to avoided visiting the North, Far North Regions, Parts of the East and Adamawa Region of Cameroun.

Ethiopia (Travel Alert) – Due to some violent anti-government protest in Amhara and Oromia and possibly in the capital Addis Ababa. The Department of States has cautioned US Citizens on travelling to states in the country. This warning expires in February 2017.

Democratic Republic of the Congo (Travel Warning) – US Citizen are advised to stay clear from the following regions in DRC - North Kivu, South Kivu; the new provinces of Bas-Uele, Haut-Uele and Ituri (northeastern part of the former Oriental Province); and Tanganyika and Haut-Lomami (northeastern and central parts of the former province of Katanga).

Nigeria (Travel Warning) – 20 Nigerian States have been declared to be unsafe to travelers due to Boko Haram terror activities in the north and Kidnapping and robberies in other regions these states are Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, and Zamfara.

Kenya (Travel Warning) - Due to threat by the al-shabaab group, the US department of state has warned against visiting the following regions in Kenya - Mandera, Wajir and Garissa (including the cities of El Wak, Wajir, Garissa, Mandera and Liboi), the coastal counties of Tana River and Lamu, the area of Kilifi county north of Malindi, and the Nairobi neighborhood of Eastleigh.

  • Burkina Faso (Travel Warning)
