Zikas Virus (ZIKV) has since spread to other continents such as Asia and the American continents. Recent studies has linked the Zika Virus to Microcephaly, a severe neurological birth defect. Unborn babies are most at risk from Zika virus complications.
Athletes travelling to Brazil for the 2016 summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro has been cautioned to protect themselves from being exposed to the virus.
Zika is contracted by mosquitoe bites. Zika is carried by a particular species of mosquitoes called known as A.aegypti and A. albopictus. Most cases of people who are infected with Zika were as a result of travelling to tropical regions such as Brazil, Paraguay and Colombia or being in contact with someone who has ZIKV.
How can a person be contract Zika?
Apart from mosquito bites, research has proven that the virus can also be transmitted through sexual intercourse and also from a mother to a child through pregnancy. All pregnant women who are reside in or have visited any of the affect countries are advised get tested immediately to determine the current state of their immunes system and get an ultrasound, as this is the only reliable way to detect microcephaly.
What are the Symptoms of Zika Virus?
People living with the Zika Virus don't immediately display any symptoms till the virus starts to destroy the immunes system of the body. Some of the symptoms an infected person would display are;
High Fever, Rash, Red Eyes, Joint Pains and Vomiting.
Is there a cure for Zika Virus?
Sadly, there are no vaccine or cure for the virus, however scientist at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are currently working on a vaccine and are set start trials in the month of September 2016.
How can I prevent Zika Fever?
People leaving in tropical regions are advised to avoid mosquito bites by using bug sprays in their home frequently and keeping their drainages cleans.
